I was diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) when I was 16 years old and have been living with this knowledge for the past 17 years.
For those of you who are not familiar with FAP it is a rare genetic disorder that left untreated carries with it a near 100 percent life time risk of colon cancer due to polyps in the colon. This risk is eliminated by performing a colectomy. There are other symptoms and risks associated with FAP which you can learn more about here.
I am set to head in for a colectomy on Dec 1st of this year. Less than a month away and am in the process of getting myself ready for the surgery.
Reading other people’s blogs such as Stolen Colon who have FAP and/or had a colectomy has been helpful. Along these lines I thought my sharing my experience through a blog could be helpful to others in a similar situation… and could also help me through the experience as well.
